最近读 BJ Fogg 的个人介绍，看到一句很简单的话： “I decided to explore this area scientifically.”1 这句话本身没有什么复杂的地方，但我突然被最后那个 scientifically 吸引了。如果只有 explore this area，意思只是“探索这个领域”。加上一个 scientifically，动作本身没有改变，但整个动作的方法、方向和性质都发生了变化：不是随便看看，而是把它当成一个可以提出问题、设计实验、收集证据和形成理论的对象来研究。 更有意思的是，这个位置可以继续被替换：explore scientifically、explore systematically、explore independently、explore critically、explore experimentally。Explore 不需要改变，只需要替换后面的一个 adverb，新的 possibility 就不断出现。类似的还有 think strategically、learn independently、invest cautiously、build iteratively、change gradually。 我开始觉得，这有点像一个函数：explore(x)。一旦这个 grammatical form 建立起来，x 就变成了一个开放的 slot。你不只是学会了 scientifically 这个词，而是会自然地继续问：What else can be put into x? 这时候，语言已经不只是在表达一个已经存在的思想。它开始参与思想的生成。 ...
